It' s alawys been a major thing to me, how people mistreat the elderly. Sons and saughters who put them in homes and abandon them, or abuse them...It's disgusting.
A patient at my office has a son who lives at her house, eats her food and sits on the computer all day. Every once in a while he'll raise a fuss at her and tell her she's senile and crazy and threatens her life. She's a perfectly sane old woman who drives well and recently wrote a book about Virginian bridges. It's terrible.
Maybe it's a calling I should pay more attention to, but it's always deeply saddened me that some people are so disrespectful to our elders, espicially when it's for something they can do nothing about, like arthritis pain that causes them to walk slowly.
And the horror stories about nursing home are just that: horrifying. Orderlies who disregard medical orders, use one patient's meds for another, puts off important matters as long as possible, and that's just what I know from working with those orderlies. Let alone the personal care the elderly recieve. No visitors, no real caring around you, and 1/2 the time, you're sitting in your own waste. It breaks my heart.
I really think those who mistreat the elderly should suffer the same type of punishment those who abuse children or animals get, but it's harder to prove when you can claim the senility of the old person.

Treating anyone differently because of their age is just one type of many types of discrimination. We have laws to protect people based on their gender, race, class, ethnicity and sexual orientation, most laws protect against age discrimination as well but basically I think those who mistreat the elderly should be held to the same laws about discrimination. Obviously, not all elderly people are helpless by any means, but some are and can't get out of an abusive situation and if the situation is brought to the attention of someone who can help them then I basically think elderly abuse is the same as child abuse.

i'm getting rather aggravated whilst everyone gets mistreated yet for some unusual reason whilst the elderly are in properties or maybe in well being facility they're talked to love they have not any rights and each from time to time as though they do no longer even exist. I observed my own mom in well being facility on a ward with different women people that the place lost and did no longer comprehend what to do. concepts you neither did she however the nurses a number of them the place a catastrophe waiting to ensue.

I think it is a shame how the general public treats the elderly these days, considering that these people are pretty much responsible for getting us all where we are today. It saddens me to see a young person speak to their elders as if they were trash. In my days of growing up, that would earn you a smack in the mouth or a good butt whooping. I guess that the fear of "abusing" your kids keeps parents from teaching these values to their kids these days, and for those that mistreat the elderly, well, I feel that there in a special place set aside in hell for them.

Ok, physically. No offense but those who mistreat the elderly physically are dumbass. Also, young people have to learn to use their words properly cause calling an elder who is rude to you a ***** or bastard or any other form of cussing is immature and stupid. Also, it won't get to them and you are acting like dumbass. Try a more appropriate approach that will bother the elder but not insult them like "It's so sad how people your age wan't to educate people my age but how do you expect yourselfs to educate us with manners when you yourselfs don't have any" and then you leave or if it's not that big a deal then just shut up and leave cause seriously, they aren't worth your time and they are old , they are allowed to be bitter. You just have to be the more educated and polite one. Using your brain won't hurt. Good luck sweetie :)!

I don't know where you live but where I'm from I have never seen the elderly mistreated in stores in my community. If you believe an elderly person is being mistreated please contact Social Services for the elderly in your state.

I rarely see the elderly being treated badly. You should say something when you see it happening, stand up for that old person, and make the bad person ashamed. Or move to someplace where people are nicer, perhaps Oregon. No, wait, on second thought, don't move to Oregon.

i think the people who mistreat the elderly will eventually endure that by themselves (cause and effect)
although i don't see people are rude to the elderly, it seems that sometimes some elderly are cheated.

I think that elderly people should be treated with good manners and consideration, but also, I have seen older people pushing people aside to get served in shops, some of them treat young people like dirt,The elderly seem to be at their worst at a hotel buffet, the seem scared to death that someone may get a little more than them, just remember folks;people treat you as you treat them
