Given that an illegal drug trade already exists, without regulation or taxation, there are advantages to bringing drugs under control. If legal, users would not suffer from being social outsiders; i.e., they would not be forced to use illegal and unsafe means for procuring or enjoying their drugs. Further, the prices of previously-illegal drugs would drop, causing them to be more affordable and less economically devestating to users. As it stands, the high price of some drugs can drive a person into bankruptcy and far more dangerous crime. Of course, if legal, the drug itself can be regulated and made more safe; less LSD-laced marijuana, for example, or cyanide-laced cocaine, if the government starts caring about things like that. When the citizens are better off, the government and economy are better off too, through higher productivity and other indirect benefits. Finally, there is the financial benefits to the government directly; less money being spent on drug busts and other policing and more revenue from taxable pharmaceuticals. The only possible downside is an increase in addiction, but not only does this negative pale in comparison, but may not be so bad relative to existing problems with alcohol, cigarettes, asprin, etc.

Illegal drugs have a recorded medical history, in addition to hurting someone else.
The reason for alcohol prohibition and limits are the crimes attached to them, not really the persons own health.
One Example:
Mr Rudolf Valentino movie star that was drinking so strong it killed him. Actual comatose, mixing of alcohols making a stronger one at the bar stool. The bartender knowing the movie star added extra power to kill him for all these women 'fawning' over the movies.

I think Marijuana should be legalized and regulated like alcohol. I think you should be able to get a prescription for heroin. You can get one for methadone. Homemade Methamphetamine is really nasty. It gives you black sores and rots your teeth. I believe drug addiction is a disease not a crime. Alcohol kills and injures more people per year than all other drugs combined.
