The origin of the word comes from the Sanskrit word avatara which means "descent of a god to earth. It says that it is also someone who embodies an idea or concept. I'm not sure that such a person would know that they are an avatar, so they probably wouldn't take offense.

I havent seen an Avatar in a few centuryes , beside I really canpt visuallize any of them typing in front of a computer or moving a mouse, beside I don´t think any of them could keep calm minded if the computer frost or delays or catch a virus or deletees their info,,, So in case of any new techno era avatar out there get away from the pc before you loose that grace

Avatar originally meant a representation or reicarnation of a god, particular in Hinduism. Like Krishna and Rama are avatars of Vishnu.
