I wasn't old enough to be interested when it was being made, but now I am watched the seasons in order on DVD w/ my dad, and I think it's a really good series! Whats up with that.

Although, I am starting to watch the 3rd Season, and I hate the change they made to the theme song. :P

Star Trek: Enterprise made 3 crucial mistakes that doomed the series to be unsuccessful from the beginning.

1. When the series began, the first thing that Star Trek fans immediately realized was a departure from the 4 previous Star Trek series -- it was the opening title song. The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and all 10 Star Trek movies all had beautiful symphonies opening the show or movie. Enterprise had this unfamiliar rock song WITH WORDS and that was something that we didn't like as Star Trek fans.

2. As that uncomfortable song was playing during the opening credits, the next thing we noticed was that the series wasn't called "STAR TREK: Enterprise"; it was simply called "Enterprise." I can't speak for all Star Trek fans, but that was pretty much a slap in the face to me as a Star Trek fan. It was as if the creators of the series wanted to distance themselves from Star Trek in a way that, perhaps, would be subtle enough not to notice. Well, we noticed. And we complained. In the latter seasons of Enterprise, the creators finally added "Star Trek" to the opening credits and, thus, rightly became "Star Trek: Enterprise." It's important to understand that Star Trek fans love the continuity of all the series. While we enjoy when the creators and writers of the show find new and interesting ways to keep us entertained, they must not depart from what makes us love Star Trek. There is a reason why there have been 5 series -- 3 of which have lasted for 7 seasons each -- and 10 movies. It is because the writers stayed true to all that is "Star Trek". The creators of "Enterprise" should have done the same.

3. The crew of Enterprise was always getting beat up in space. They always seemed over-matched when battling w/ starships. We understand that the series took place during the Federation's infancy, but we didn't like seeing Starfleet frequently getting outgunned in firefights.

And those were the main three things that doomed the Enterprise series. During the latter seasons, the starship Enterprise wasn't getting outgunned nearly as frequent as in the beginning, but by the time they became stronger the series had already lost so much of it's fan base that it's finale became imminent.
Star Trek: Enterprise was a good series that simply made some creative mistakes.

I know this is an old question, but I thought I would add to the discussion. I don't know about other TV markets, but in the St. Louis area, it aired on Saturday afternoons on the least popular network. Its start time was often bumped due to hockey and other sport related events. I tried to set it up to record with a timer (back when we still used VCR's) but i could never nail down when it would be on. Because of that, I missed most of the episodes. After a while, it just wasn't worth the effort to try and watch it. Now that it is no Netflix, I can finally watch it in its entirety. I honestly can say that it is a great show. I agree that the theme song almost completely ruined it for me the first time I watched it.

I watch the reruns late at night (I'm a really late night kind of person). The show is okay, but at times the dialog is really bad! But it's kind of interesting anyway. I don't think enough people liked it enough to keep it running on prime time.

I only know of one theme song. It doesn't seem to fit the show at all! I think it might be called "Faith of the Heart".

the theme song change made me wanna cry. they countrified it, i was sooo mad.

i think it ended because, simply, not as many people were watching it. captain aracher changed a lot during the whole xindi thing, becoming a lot more sadistic, so people couldn't relate to him as much. the storylines started to go downhill, because, let's face it, there were 4 other trek series preceding it, so they ran out of material.

in addition to that, once gene roddenberry died, i think it all went downhill. he was the driving force, the inspiration, the IDEA, for star trek. brannon braga and whoever else there was just couldn't fill his shoes. he set the bar pretttyyy high.

i thought it was great too [i loved trip & mayweather especially] but after a while, it just changed, and definitely not for the better.
