Girlfriends dumping their problems on you: how would you handle this?

I have an aquantance that I dont talk to very often and lives an hour away - havent seen her in years. When we do talk, she rambles on 90 miles an hour about all the tragedy in her life and never asks how I am doing or whats happening to me. Now, I just received an email from her about 20 lines long of all of her issues and not once does she ask, "so how are you doing and whats new?" How do you deal with such selfish people?

If you still want her for a friend don't answer her emails for a couple of weeks and when you do don't respond to the stuff she's told you about. Tell her it was nice hearing from her and you and your family are fine and for her to keep in touch. Don't say anything else. That way you'll only have to hear from her maybe once a month and if you keep sending her the same response she may get the hint.

Why not just come right out and ask her if it's all about her, or if she's ever really interested in what you're up to? On another note, it sounds like she's really in the middle of a big pity party. How do I deal with such people? Well, me personally, I got a divorce, but hey, that's a whole different story, and it won't help you out at all. Good luck!

You can tell her how perfectly well you understand that friendship is about giving without expecting to receive, BUT that you feel you give too much and receive nothing,besides you can tell her that there are things named manners, which are clearly unknown to her. If you just want to be subtle buy her a mirror or a diary.

confront her. tell her how you feel. see what happens. sometimes when people are behaving like that they dont realize how their behaviour makes you feel.
