The drive will not open. If I open it manually, and put a disc in, it does not recognize that there is a disc in it. Device manager says it's running properly. I'm not sure if I have any kind of warranty, since I bought it at CostCo. It's less than a year old. What should I do? Toshiba's website was no help at all.

Based on your thorough description of the symptoms, you either have a problem with the lens or lasers. I would first try a CD/DVD cleaning disk and see if that takes dust/dirt from the lens and makes it work again. (You can pick these up from any DVD retailer including Walmart.) In the likely possibility that it doesn't fix the issue, then the drive is toast.

If it's less than a year old, it's still very likely under manufacturer's warranty. Call (800) 457-7777 for Toshiba's OEM tech support and they can tell you for sure. If it's still under warranty, they will make arrangements to get a new drive to you or have you send the machine in...depending on how they handle these types of issues.

Your other choice - an USB external DVD-ROM/burner would also work and wouldn't require any opening up of the PC. You can also get an aftermarket replacement as suggested above.

Go to device manager again and un-install the drive, then reboot. You should get a balloon in the tray,"New Hardware Found".This reloads the drivers. See if the drive works the proper way, if it doesn't then the drive may have been damaged. If it is less than a year old, call your local Costco and see if they will replace it. If they won't replace the computer, then consider a new DVD drive. If you go to the trouble to replace the drive, you may as well replace it with a DVD+-RW.

The other things I would suggest are uninstalling that cd drive by the system window in control panel, and then reinstall. (may want to find drivers on the net first before you do that though) Other thing is run a scan for viruses/spyware. I've had many viruses cause cd drives to stop working. Just a thought.

Consider an aftermarket replacement. Most local tech shops can givey ou a price for replacement of the drive. You might also do well to find someone (a friend?) who will do the work without charge, all you pay for is the parts and pizza. (grin).
