The Alienist by Caleb Carr
It's a really cool mystery set in NY around the turn of the last century. It's a page turner and is historically accurate. Calling it a mystery novel doesn't really do it justice, nor would calling it an historical novel.
It was a bestseller a few years ago.

Depends on what you like to read...Try Jean Auel's Earth's Children series: The Clan of the Cave Bear, The Valley of Horses, The Mammoth Hunters, The Plains of Passage, and The Shelters of Stone; you might also like Maxx Brand's novels, Syrup, Jennifer Government, and Company; if you can follow not-quite-sci fi and parallel realities, you might like Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series, The Eyre Affair, Lost in a Good Book, The Well of Lost Plots, and Something Rotten; if you prefer something set in modern times, you might like Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series, and if you have ever seen the movie Pay it Forward and liked it, you would probably love the book. It's written by Catherine Ryan Hyde.

Band of Brothers - True story of E-Company made into a mini series by Hanks and Spielburg. Awesome read, and give great reflection on what those guys did over there.
All Creatures Great and Small (and its sequels) - True accounts of a vetinary surgeon in Yorkshire England. Often hilarious, touching and great characters to watch interact with each other.
The Hiding Place - True account of Corrie Ten Boom who hid Jews during the Nazi occupation of Holland. A good sequel is Tramp for the Lord.

Granny D My Walk Across America in my 90th Year.
This woud be autobiographical. This book literally fell off the shelf and landed at my feet while I was looking for another book. I took it as a sign that I should read it and I did. It was one of the greatest books I have ever read. It is the true story of a woman who wanted to draw attention to campaign reform. She began her walk in California at the age of 88, she walked all the way to Washington DC, at one point she had to cross country ski due to the snow on her route. It is an amazing story of her journey and she recalls events from her life. Along the way she gives speeches at colleges and other venues. A very wise woman with an amazing spirit. I highly recommend it.

Nonfiction: The Mind's I, by Douglas Hofstadter - quirky but fascinating exploration of the mind and thought. Very thought provoking & excellent mental gymnastics. [category: philosophy, metaphysics...]
Fiction: Going Postal (or any of the Discworld series books) by Terry Pratchett. Absolutley hilarious: think of a grown up Monty Python on steroids. Guaranteed to make you laugh, chuckle, chortle, and even guffaw. Pratchett is the funniest writer since Douglas Adams. [category: humor, fantasy, science fiction]

um depends on what you like, but a good author is clive cussler. he wrights big books but they are good. I think his best book is "atlantis found" It is a great book. its fictional and has nothing to do with the 'atlantis' we know today. it is an adventure/mystery book. really good. makes u want to keep reading. I would reccomend it because it entertains people of all ages, im only 14 and i know 80 year olds that are reading it. not to suggest that ur old. also, it is great in detail so you know exactly what is going on and you get a good sence of the characters. you feel you really get to know them. i know i probably sound crazy but it is a good book and you should read it.

The Pearl, by John Steinbeck. I would call it realistic fiction. I't set in a tropical lanscape, perfect for summer reading, and it's a light, easy read with a great moral.
