1. Caring for pets CAN help develop character, but that largely depends on the child's personality. It certainly would not hurt. The worst that could happen is the child won't have a significant reaction.
2. Specifically, caring for animals can develop responsibility, compassion, patience, tollerance, and many of the same characteristics needed in child rearing.
3. Again, the worst that could come from having a pet is that pre-existing attitudes would be revealed. This could be beneficial, as those issues could then be dealt with appropriately.
4. Absolutely! Animals help people in more ways than we can count! From trained dogs helping the blind see, to companionship that helps people deal with depression.
5. Yes, yes, yes!!!
6. Speaking generally, I'd say about 10-12. But this will, of course, vary from child to child.

Yes I think that pets are good children. My Granddaughter is 14 months, we have custody of her so it is not as if she just visits. We have 11 birds, 2 ferrets, 2 cats and a dog. With the birds she knows that she has to be gentle with them, the cats she has to be nice or they will claw her, not to be mean to the dog or he might bite and the ferrets have taught her to steal and hide things.
Yes I think that society needs animals they have an unconditional love. They are always there for you when you need them.
Yes I would never get rid of my pets as they are a part of our family.
As far as age that depends on the parents and there patients
