I just inherited my first fish tank...the filter is an inside filter, and I don't think that it is working properly. There is no visual show that the water is circulating. I have no paperwork or anything. I put a new cartridge in, placed it in a rear corner of the tank and plugged it in. There is a gentle humming sound, but no water movement? Is there something silly that I am not doing??? HELP ME PLEASE.

The water should be circulating in the tank. Try pouring water in the reservoir of the wheel. This is called priming . I have to do this almost every time I clean my fish tank.

If there is not water movement then no it is not working. I'm not sure what kind of filter it is, but the common ones that hang outside of the tank need to be filled up with water before they will work properly.

I reccommend taking it to a petstore (like Petsmart) and they will gladly check it out for you to see if it works or needs an new parts.

If there is no movement, like others have said, then its not working. If the brand name is on the filter somewhere you may be able to look up the manual online. If not can you describe it a little more and maybe we can help you figure it out.

Well, I'm an owner of two fish tanks. What you may want to do is take your filter to a pet store and get it examined. They will gladly examine it and tell you everything you need to know about your filter! If you want to self-examine it, just wash it thorughly.

the water needs to be almost touching the top of the filter.....try pouring water in the filter.sometime you cant see the water movement.but you will know if its working by how dirty the tank gets and how fast it gets dirty.

You have to take the motor apart and clean the rotor. Ask your local shop or a neighbourhood expert! Most motor bits are simple and the dismantling is also simple. Be gentle!

Stick your hand in the tank. Do you feel water going in? Do you feel water going out.
