It may seem like that to you but were you there? World War II involved nearly the whole world (hence the term) and many people thought it was the end of the entire world with the dropping of two nuclear bombs.
That was quickly followed by Korea, the brink of disaster in Cuba/US in the early 1960s in the Bay of Pigs when the USA and the USSR came within whiskers of nuking each other into oblivion.
Then Americans shot John, Martin, Malcolm and Bobby. Israel and the Middle east erupted. VietNam got hot in the late 1950s and never slowed down until 1976 after a parade of nations tried to bring democracy to Southeast Asia.
Then we had wars in the Falkland Islands, Grenada, Somalia, hostages in Iran,, Gulf War I.... it just seems like the past was peaceful.
Humans have been killing each other since Adam and Eve.

Actually, that's not true. There was just as much fighting in 1956 as in 2006. The only difference today is that the media covers it much more intensely. War is good for TV ratings, as many people want to know what's going on, therefore, people stay glued to the TV.
There are many conspiracy theories regarding CNN and Fox News: some claim that these two channels helped the U.S. start the war in Iraq by failing to broadcast opposing opinions. These statements are shaky at best, however.
