Well have you ever tried it? I doubt anyone formally told women they have to squat. I think that it was trial and error. If a woman stands to pee, she will most likely pee down her leg. And if she doesn't she will have to stand in a bow legged position. Squatting is just easier.

It can be done standing, if the woman doesn't mind it running down her leg!

not unless we want to pee on ourselves. why don't you tuck your private bits back between your legs and see if you can pee standing up and remember no hands allowed.
