I used to go to the gym twice a day a while back. Was in the best shape of my life.

It's fine as long as you get plenty of rest and eat for enegy between workouts. Also don't do the same thing on both sessions.

The evening session has to be light (preferably cycling...something low impact).

Also remember resting your muscles is part of the process. When your muscles feel tight or sore, just relax and take the day off. You will come back stronger.

Better that you concentrate on high quality, demanding workouts 5 days a week.

I'll explain.

When you work out, your muscles break down. This is a necessary process. Given recovery time, those muscle cells rebuild into finer, stronger (more toned!) strands. You gain length, strength, durability, and definition. The higher density muscle also increases your metabolism, even at rest.

However, some make the mistake of overtraining. Muscles that lack the recovery period canibalize themselves. You may take off fat along the way, but your muscles will not completely rebuild.

5 days a week where you combine aerobic (cardiovascular) conditioning and strength training for a total of 1-2 hours is excellent. You will most assuredly progress!

If you were to add anything to the mix - if you were dying to add a sixth day - I would suggest a cross train. Always a good idea. Some you might consider would be: pilates, yoga, biking, swimming, and rowing. Hiking and rock climbing can be lots of fun too, if you have the right environment (or health club) for it.

Above all, please, don't forget to have fun along the way. Exercise without the fun demotivates after a while, and then where will you be?

Yes. the first time to do your regular workout. The second time several hours later to work on your hot spots. Keeping in mind that you still must rest for a full day between workouts. This is when your muscles get bigger. And this is so your muscles don't fatigue. Or I should say get injured. At one time this method was used by olympic weight lifters in Finland. They were the world champions at the time. This is an exelled program that will make you stronger fairly quick. But a novice can start out using this system safely. Use only weights you can handle and always use a spotter.

No-you're doing too much . You don't mention what you do at the gym-if you're doing cardio for 2-3 hrs-too much for 1to at the most 11/2hrs per day is sufficient. If you are doing 1 hr of cardio in the morning and then 1hr-full body weight training in the evening then that's OK too or even swimming 1 hr in the evening is OK but 3hrs is really overdoing it. Every time you push your body to extreme your body produces free radicals that attack you immune system and you're then susceptible to illness and disease so pushing yourself to the extreme is not good. Whenever you do anything to the extreme-eating,drinking,and evercising you are harming yourself. Slow down. You can go to the gym twice daily for a total of 21/2at the most then the next day do your cardio(aerobic) in the morning but instead of the gym go for a walk in the park or do some light jogging). Moderation is always best.

Depends upon your goals...but certainly you can do it...although you will need to have proper diet with it...just because your muscle groups will need recovery...

I'd hit different muscle groups if I were you...say upper body during morning and lower during evening...

Arnold and others did it...you can find alot of sources on google...for example type "Arnold's workout" or "Gym Workout routine twice a day"

I'm sure you'll find something useful...but just be careful of an injury...statistically you are more prone to injury because you are working twice a day and more than normal.

An hour of physical exercise is usually the ideal amount in a day. Sometimes over doing it or doing too much can be bad.

Well, your muscles need time to rest and recover. If you aren't working out like enough to sweat or make your muscles hurt the first time you go, it's ok to go again and have a real workout. But you should only really work out once every other day or so.

As long as when you do it, you're not over-excercising yourself. When you excercise, you need to only put out 75-80% effort. If you put out 100%, then you're only wearing out your body and not doing anything besides tiring yourself. If you're trying to get into shape, just excercise yourself enough to get your heart rate up. It's not a matter of how long, but a matter of how hard you work.
