That depends. If the icon has a little arrow in the corner, then it's a shortcut and deleting it will not affect the application that the icon is a shortcut to. However, if there's no little arow in the corner, then it may be an actual file and deleting the icon *will* delete the file. (However, if you've already done this by accident, you should be able to retrieve the deleted file from your "Recycle Bin"...post again if you need directions on how to do that.)

You can use the Windows Explorer or My Computer programs to organize your files into folders on your hard drive (usually the C drive). You can then move files from your desktop into the appropriate folders. Or, if this sounds too complicated or daunting, just right-click on the desktop and choose New, Folder. This will create a folder right on your desktop (when you create it, it will be waiting for you to give it a name) and you can simply drag and drop any desktop icons into that folder.

Hope this helps!

They are just shortcuts, they are icons that lead them to the right program thats in your Program Files. You can delete them and get them back anytime later.

Delete away! Once you want them back, just look for the actual program in your C:\Program Files and go to the source of the program. Just right click on the .exe program and then choose the "create shortcut" option and then you can basically drag and drop it back on to your desktop in the future.

Anything on the desktop can be deleted, except the recycling bin. Those cant delete themselves in XP.

too much clutter in the desktop as well as in the root directory (drive c:) slows down your startup. do not store huge files in this areas, instead, create directories for your files in other drives or partitions in your hard disks.

to clean up your desktop, in XP:

right click on the desktop, PROPERTIES, select DESKTOP tab, click CUSTOMIZE DESKTOP button. On the GENERAL tab, uncheck all boxes if you want to HIDE the usual desktop icons like MY COMPUTER, etc. or:

click on CLEAN DESKTOP NOW button at the bottom.

generally, you can move the files (not the desktop icons) to a folder to clean up the mess.

if the items you are refferring to are shortcuts - go ahead! trash 'em. you still have those in your start menu anyway

When you are on your desk top -- right click on the mouse button and make a new file. Label this fill ' My desk top stuff' and then drag and drop everything you don't want visible on your desk top. you can even make more than one folder. It works great. I have one for Internet, and one for my stuff. When I want something I just click on the file and it opens and there is all my stuff. Out of site but still there where I can find it. And you can always download an Icon program and change the file to something you want to look at and more appropriate for the files hidden. If you get more stuff on your desk top you can always put it in one of the files.

Your company policy might say not to change these settings to avoid confusing your MIS/IT/IRM/IS/CS/....(whatever its not in Dept of Labor List, nor the job titles) support staff that have no real education/training in Microsoft, Novell, Apple Mac, OS/2 Warp, or RedHat Linux, ... or the thing that your company is using, but some general knowledge. Its not worth firing the person fooling with the computer "sticky fingers". Just takes more time for other workers to find things.
