EXPLAIN THESE PLEASE: " Speech is civilization itself. The word, even the most contradictory word, preserves contact- it is in silence which isolates."

When the lines of communication break down, civilization breaks down. It's because of our ability to converse, express ourselves verbally, and communicate with one another that we evolved from primates.

It also explains that, without communication, we're locked inside our bodies, completely isolated. That's what that statement means.

It's all about preserving communication. It's like an ad I've heard...the catch phrase is, "When you don't understand each other, things can go terribly wrong." It's saying that simply, without speech there would be no civilized world, and even the unmeaningful words and the words that don't matter are important because they let us contact each other and express ourselves. In silence, you are alone and lonely.

This is how I see it, I'm sure it could be interpreted in many ways, but I hope this helps!

Without speech, there would be no communication. Without communication, of any kind, there is silence.

Not sure if that's what you wanted....is what popped out of my head.
