Your body makes use of hormones to send chemical signals that have myriad effects on what genes are expressed and what proteins are synthesized and what happens to your body.
There are always hormones active, and they are always in a state of change. They allow different parts of the body to communicate effectively with one another, so that one part can "tell" another what it is doing.

the biggest hormonal change is during puberty. that's nature's way of getting the body ready for the reproductive phase of life. the next is menopause( both male and female) that's nature's way of saying that the reproductive phase is ending. basically hormonal changes prepares the body for sudden events in life, such as fight or flight, sexual arousal, emotional swings good and bad. we are a walking chemical factories

hormones are chemical messengers for our body.
all you can "do" is contract and secrete. the secretions are there to signal (indirectly) contractions/ other secretions.
