I agree for the most part. They are also dumbing down the services by lowering standards. One of the 2 military that were kidnapped and killed had not graduated from high school! He was of Mexican descent.
They also have a defacto draft by keeping people in the service beyond their ETS date to get out!
I think every republican Congressman or Senator who has a kid military age should make them join. Let a few of their kid's come back in body bags and see how quick this war would end!

It's true the Army is an all volunteer Army, but that doesn't mean everyone wants to go to war. Many people join the Army for the college money, without the Army they may not be able to go to school, some people join for other benefits like insurance. Some people join because they have absolutely nowhere else to go. All these people are not joining just because they want to go fight. And yes there is a stop loss program. Soldiers who have honored their contract and served their time, if their units are deploying, they are not allowed to get out. How fair is that? And it's also true that they keep upping the age limit to enter. The sole reason for that is that they aren't meeting their recruiting goals so their reaching out to the older crowd that isn't making it in life. My husband is in the Army, and I can say, we definitely don't get Americas best and brightest.

I am a Republican (and yes, that's with an "a" not an "o") who is against the war in Iraq and has been since the very beginning. I don't agree with many of Bush's foreign policies, especially when he is using United States strenght to police and bully the world. While I don't agree with the war, I do support the troops. They are doing a thankless and often dangerous job. However, if you ask the troops, there are many of them who are grateful to be doing their part to "defend America's freedom" and "free Iraq from tyranny." For a lot of years, the United States has been luring in soliders with promises--help paying for college, benefits, etc. But the men and women in service are not "volunteers." That word insinuates completing a service out of alturism but their motives are not always alturistic. They are getting paid for this job. They get a steady paycheck, medical insurance, retirement plans, etc. They are government employees, same as a senator or representative. More importantly, they aren't being lied to. News reports from all over the world are telling what is going on in Iraq. War is evil and the invasion of Iraq especially was unnecessary, but EVERY solider knows that war is a possiblity. To deny that would be foolish and for you to insinuate that soliders have been tricked into service is an insult to their intelligence and ours. God bless the men and women in Iraq and I hope that not one more has to give his or her life for a pointless war.

Like you say, they are "volunteers".
They didnt join the Military thinking that they were going to get a career, and not have to fight. If they did, then they are the ones who are deserting because they joined up thinking it was going to be "easy" and not get "hurt"...
Sorry kids, the wake up call is out, and anyone joining NOW, knows that they are in it for the distance. So, the deserters are in Canada like they always are. And, they can be shot if they come back, during a War.
You volunteer, and its been going on for all these years now, they know that there is a good chance, that they will go to Iraq, so they dont have anything to complain about.
Those that served, did so vilantly, some with thier lives, and some with lost limbs, but, they came back MEN/WOMEN!!
Let the cowards who sign up and run, desert and leave the Country.
I wish you well..

Yes, plenty of soldiers are against the war. And plenty aren't. The reasons you cite for soldiers leaving have little to do with politics and everything to do with time there vs. time home.
As an aside: Not all soldiers are poor, you fool. Every officer is college educated as are many of our NCOs. We made the CHOICE to defend this country.
And with all of your complaining....did you go to Afghanistan? Iraq? Kuwait? We aren't over there just handing out band-aids....ask any soldier from and engineer unit what's going on there. It won't be what the media spoon-feeds you. It won't be what the extremists are brainwashing you with. Rebuilding. Helping people who need it. In both Afghanistan and Iraq.
Fine, don't support the war....but support the troops who are there. And talking shiznit about them ISN'T support.
Do a little research....recruiting and retention isn't having any problem keeping soldiers in. There is currently no stop-loss. So....why are we reenlisting? Have you ever thought of the fact that many soldiers are PROUD of what we do?
The problem isn't OEF/OIF...it's how far extended we are. We're too spread out. Soldiers aren't filing for CO status because they are against the war....nor are they going AWOL because they are against the war. They do it because they are on their 3rd, 4th or 5th deployment. They're TIRED.
You can't understand unless you've been there....until you raise your hand and swear to "Support and Defend the Constitution of the United States of America, against all enemies, foreign and domestic...." don't pretend to know what soldiers are doing or why.

The military is not a government handout. The benefits are earned by the members of the armed services. You don't want to fight, stay out of the service. You can't work the assembly line at fords and have a problem with building cars. Its just part of the program. If they upped the age the ranks would fill very very quickly.

no one wants war. but sometimes it is a necessary evil. those soldiers didn't join just so they could go to war. the military has many opportunities for them. dont critize people trying to better themselves. at least they are doing something instead of condeming others who serve.

Jesus has his very own defense force. And whilst he returns he is going to apply it, and it would be the main useful defense force ever assembled. As for Christians combating different Christians in war, God can cope with it, and any judgments to pass alongside with it.
