If they are not yet nesting in the house try this trick that I am proud to write that I figured out by myself. Make a note where they are getting in. (doors and windows, cracks etc.)
Mix water with a little liquid bleach (chlorox). Sponge the ant runways with the liquid. The bleach destroys the chemical trails these resourceful pests use to signal other ants to get to where the source of food is. Lay down a lot of this watery solution at the entry places to your house.
Do it 2 or 3 times a day. especially after a rain.
Try it it really works.
If the pests have set up a nest(s) inside the house do the above, but also try to find out where they seem to congregate. Tohse3 areas, on the floor, should be the places that you lay down drops of a sugar, water and borax solution. You can buy that mixture at your local garden center. Be careful if you have pets or young children. (place it in areas out of reach), Allow the ants to drink as much of the solution as they want. They will bring the liquid back to their nest and then share the liquid with all the inhabitants. Eventually, the whole colony will die. It takes time and new applications of the fluid every day or better still twice a day. Sponge up the old bait and dry the surface, before laying more drops of bait.
There are one type of ant that may require an exterminator to save your house. Those ants are carpenter ants. They are serious pests uin tht tunnel into wood in order to make their nests. (they do eat wood like termites do), but they can seriously damage the wood in a house given enough time.
These ants are large (one quarter to one half inch long.) They also dark black. If you spot those ants in the house, catch several and have them identified by a local entomologist (Govt. or university). If they are carpenter ants, call in a professional exterminator.
Bonne chance;

The BEST thing for an indoor ant problem is a product called TERRO. It is a thick liquid that the ants carry back to their nest. Other ants feed on it, and it is eventually carried to and kills the queen, which kills the colony. The first few days, you might see more ants because they are drawn to the bait. Not to worry -- that doesn't last long.

You can use TERRO around pets if you place the baits out of the pet's reach. Try a window sill, under the sink, behind the fridge. Place the bait as close to an ant trail as possible. It only takes one ant to get a new trail working the bait.

If the infestation is really bad, you might try sending your pet on vacation with a friend for a couple of weeks. Mix up a bait of borax, sugar, and flour. Some people use water to make a dough, but the dry mixture will work just as well. Put it everywhere you see ants -- inside and out. Go heavy on the borax and use enough surgar to attract the ants. The ants will carry this back to the colony. The borax will kill them out, queen and all, but it will take a couple of weeks of feeding, and you do not want your pet or small children exposed to the borax.

I have tons of ants in my house too. The big carpenter ants. I have 2 cats so I don't dare put any thing down as you never know. I just keep killing them. I have noticed that the more it rains, the more they come inside. I guess their home must leak or something.
:-)

As for the biting? Do you have red ants? They sting! Try pouring rubbing alcohol or vinegar on the site. I've heard that it helps. Or an over the counter itch remedy?

Chinese chalk is the best solution I have found. Just draw a line across the access into your house, and they can't cross it.
I've also heard that nutmeg does the same thing.
