Most Americans don't even pay attention to their local news, let alone world news. I'm American, and am disappointed in our self-centered world view.

Americans only know what they can see, and what they see are other Americans. Less than 7% of Americans have passports. They watch American tv, American movies, listen to American music, blah, blah, blah ........ The Americans I know have no clue that other people in the world do not think the exact same way they think. New Orleans, post Katrina, is a good example of impoverishment in the USA, but Americans still think the USA is the greatest country on the planet. They are actually PROUD to be PROUD. They are boastful ! It's just part of Americanism. Italians have the finest pasta and opera, the Germans yodel best and have the best beer, the Brits have the finest clothing, the French have the finest chefs, etc., etc. So, let the Americans boast, and just laugh at them because of their distinct character. LOL. Good luck.

To assume that all Americans believe they are the center of the universe is a comment made by someone as narrow minded as the people who assume you are American. Insults and ignorance are not going to help as those exact people will respond with the same ignorance they used in the first place.
Congradulations on entering yourself into the shallow end of the gene pool.
Insults and assumptions are the tools of the foolish. Unfortunately there are so few inteligent life forms left on the planet that the cluless unfortunately dominate the planet.

I can't answer why people assume you're an American, however, I don't agree with your opinion of Americans thinking that they're the center of the universe. I'm an American and I believe I'm a typical everyday American. We (most of us) go to work everyday or school or do whatever is typical for each one of us. I'm not saying that there aren't ANY arrogant Americans, but I believe that can be said of people in any country.
Sometimes people generalize too much instead of getting to know the individual.
I hope I have shed some light on the subject for you.

first off, your assuming way to much about us. I don't recall anyone ever saying we're the center of the universe. Also look at the bottom of the page, there are places to click to go to a particular country, your on the US yahoo page. Not all americans are arrogant like you assume. No one said we were the "better part" except you. Granted there are some people over here that are arrogant retards, most poloticians and other people, but they don't represent me.

Well my dear. I am American and I don't know anyone who feels that our country thinks that we're superior to all others. That's kind of a blanket steriotype. I am a nurse and go to work everyday and try to help as many people as I can. One of the BEST things about my job is meeting patients from other countries and listening to them, hear their stories and how I can help them. I am a hospice nurse; I help people who are terminally ill. I'll add that MANY of my patients are not from the United States, and I love and treasure them ALL. Please don't keep thinking that we all feel that we're the center of the universe. It isn't true..... well, I see some answerers are a little more blunt than I:) I think the USA does a pretty good job taking care of the rest on the other hand also. I'll have to agree with them. I am a humble American; but also DAMN PROUD. God Bless America.:)

Well, we saved the asses of Europe in two world wars, and then rebuilt Europe - twice, because we were, and are, caring about the rest of the world instead of more than just how much dope we can buy in Amsterdam - get it? When there is a tsunami, a famine, an earthquake ( even in Iran ) who is there to help rebuild, with food and water? Damn straight, it's the Americans. Who helped US after Katrina? No other country did, not one, none, zero, zip, nada. After the Loma Prita earthquake in 1989 and the Northridge earthquake in 1994, did any other country offer help? No. Who rebuilt Mexico City after their earthquake in 1984 - the USA. So, if you don't want our help, then don't ask. If you don't want our help, then don't accept it when it is offered. And if you don't like Americans or the USA, stay out of our universities. What the hell are you, French?

Because in geography class in the US, they only teach you about the state you live in, and Iraq.

Just to correct greg r below: The US only got involved in the second world war because the US was attacked. You know, Pearl Harbour. It wasn't just a terrible movie.
Where were they in the first world war? No where, except Americans who went to Canada or Great Britain to join the war.
And do you honestly believe that, that is what people in Amsterdam were thinking of?

Who helped you after Katrina? Canada did.

And are Americans taught that if you dislike or make an unfavouring comment about the US, they must be French?

Just remember that practically every type of ethnic person in the world, makes up the United States of America. Including Canadians!!! Are you sure you want to call all of them arrogants? I mean people living in Toronto believe that every person living in New York City always carries a gun with them, which of course is not true. How arrogant is believing in something like that?!

I guess we are so used to having to handle all the worlds problems that it is automatic that we handle yours. Who do you all come running to when someone is dropping bombs on you or a dictator is taking over, or your people are starving because of poverty? Do you rely on the "mighty" UN with their baby blue, powder puff helmets? You aren't crying, Oh Mexico, where are you, why don't you help us? Brazil, why won't you give us aid? Where are the Kiwis? Nope, you all run to us. Without the U.S. the world would have some mighty big problems. We're always bailing everyone's butts out of everything, so we have the right to think we are the center of the world. Plus, **** us off and we can blow you off the map.

Its gotta be something about "Land of the free and home of the brave". We are full of pride and we like to let everyone else in the world that we have it pretty good over here as opposed to other places in the world where there is famine, plague, or oppression. We got it all here. people from everywhere, things to do for everyone and opportunity for all. Thats why!
