The stadium was initially built in an attempt to lure the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox needed a new park, but instead of moving the team, the city of Chicago decided to build a "new" Comiskey Park.

The Giants tried to move there in 1993, but the other owners blocked the team's sale. The stadium was called the Florida Suncoast Dome at the time.
