I can't answer that for any instrumental musician, but I've written songs (with words) and of course you're restricted only by your subject. With instrumentsls, you're have an open field. You can name your song anything you want. I think that would be much easier. I'm thinking of writing instrumentals in the near future, and if I do, I'm looking forward to naming them. You aren't restricted by your subject. Yiu can name a song, "Charlene" for no other reason than you like the name. Or, "Spirit of the Valley", for no apparent reason other than it sounds nice.

It has to do with their inspiration and mood, some songs names even reflect the time they are written on like "Quintessence" by Hank Levy (its written in 5/4 time). Some songs just kind of speak the title like "so what" in Miles Davis's album Kind Of Blue, the main riff sounds like the instruments say so what when they play the Tee-Dum

They usually think of a certain mood or feeling, then base the song on it.....As in classical piano, a composer would write a song about the feeling he was in, or what inspired him. That is how jazz composers are as well... When they are inspired, they write music about it.
