I just bought my car and when I press on the brakes there is a noise, like a creaky kind of noise. Its not very loud. Normally when brakes are bad don't they screech? There is no noise at all if I'm just slowing down a bit, only if I'm a a stop sign or at a fast food drive through. Do you think it needs brake pads? I've only had it for 2 days. ( Its a 2004) Would the dealership sell me a car with bad bakes?

If the the sound is like maybe rubbing your fingers across a chalk board but not so loud, it comes from glazed brake drums--the rear brakes. The front brakes are disk and do not glaze easily. It is not a real problem other than the noice can drive you crazy. I think I would take the car back to the dealer and complain. If he is a reputable dealer, he will deglaze the drums for you. You did not say how many miles are on the car. If less than 50,000 the pads and should be fine.

Since brakes are such an important part of your car and you're not comfortable with the sound you hear, resolve the matter on the side of caution and go back to the dealer to ask about it. You don't have to go there in a mood of complaining or that you were cheated, because you don't really know at this point what's wrong. Ask and get some answers. A 2004 car will still have a manufacturer's warranty still in place. Get some peace of mind and check it out.

I just changed the pads on my front disc brakes and these one make that sound too,It's nothing to worry about, it's the new materials in the pads they have these days.
If your concerned, take it back and have them check it to be sure. Most dealerships dont sell cars without doing a safety check first.I bought a 1 year old car and they did a 150 point inspection. Seems to be alright after 2 years of driving it and 50,000 kms.

Yes they would sell you a car with bad breaks. Take the car back to the dealership and see if they will resolve the problem. I don't want to sound like a chuvanist, but bring a guy, like your dad or a very tough looking big brother.. There is a lemmon law that protects you from buying a car with defective parts. If they did not diclose this to you prior to sale they must fix. If the car was inspected, they must fix bad breaks. If you have any problems call the bbb they can help. I think there is even free leagal service regarding lemmons. Use that pc of yours and start looking up local laws.

take it back and have them check the brakes - do not wait if you are busy and can't take it in right away call them and tell them about the problem - you want to talk to the service department manager. most dealers check the cars but could have over looks the brakes - mostly likely the noise comes from brake dust.

Could be air in the brake lines / low brake fluid. As the brake pads wear out, more fluid is used from the reservoir. When the pads are replaced, the fluid level goes back up...

Hon, the dealership would sell you a car with no motor if they could get away with it. lol. Try taking it back to where you bought it and talking to them. Before you go find out about your states lemon laws so you know your rights!! My state has a lemon law, it is good for 30 days. Unless you buy a car that is clearly marked "as is". Even if it was as is, still check out your lemon laws.
