I gave mine to the doctor to dispose of but, before he took it away he asked me if I'de like to save it. Apparently there are some who eat it. Some kind of custom. Also the cord can be saved for blood in lifesaving situations too. After this I was watching discovery channel and someone had the placenta and the family fried and ate it.

I think in most states it in considered a biological hazard, just like needles used in the hospital, and they have to dispose of it properly, i am pretty sure they are not allowed to give it to you.

Some Native Americans bury them, usually with due ceremony. That seems appropriate to me. It was, after all, a part of you for nine months, and should be respected for giving your baby a safe place to be.
