OK, this is kinda dumb but a beta fish might be a good pet. I have had mine for 3 1/2 years already. They last really long, don't need much work, and only cost about $25 to get started (after that it only costs like $5 a month). The only thing is that you can only get one or two and have to keep them separated because they fight. I don't know what you were looking for but these are good pets. (fi you do get one, get it a bigger tank, like one gallon, and try to get an air pump. Even though they don't need it, it helps them last longer and require even less work) I hope this was helpful.

good question, but you must further ask yourself if you want a pet that you can interact with or spectate. it look as almost as if you have to opt for the latter, which in this case, you'll be better off with a fish, reptile, anything that can live the rest of its life confined in a glass house. since you have children that are at a curious age, you must then take on the extra responsibility of making sure they are aware of an appreciate the care of said animal(s).

I would reccomend a rabbit. You can get one that is litter trained or can be litter trained. They are friendly and fun for the kids, but can still be put in their cage if needed. Also a lot easier to keep in a contained area more than cats and dogs. If you had more room I would also reccomend a lab puppy/dog, but they need a little more space than an apartment could probably provide.

I would say a dog. Adopt a nice dog. A pit bull to be honest. Most are quiet, will play with an older child, but snuggle up and be as gentle as can be with even the youngest of babies. I wouldnt get a small dog as they would probably bite a small child. But most larger or medium dog breeds are smart and willing to be gentle and play
Cats and rodents...you have to clean the litter box.
birds can miss their pan
reptiles....well with a 2 year old?

Two pets that aren't smelly, dangerous, loud, or messy. Fish or some type of gecko, lizard, igwana, etc.

I personally would say a turtle. It doesnt take much to care for them, and kids love them.
