Thats the sort of thing said by very insecure posers who need a 1000cc +, phallic symbol. Usually their greatest fear is getting shown up by a woman, thats why I taught my sister to ride fast. Learn how to get round corners quicker than the poseurs who can only accelerate hard in a straight line. (always looks somewhat impressive when the footrests and exhausts are ground down by 'excessive' lean angles on cornering) Stay off the interstates when possible, find the twistiest roads you can. Put real good tyres on it, the lighter weight and lower power will give you reasonable wear life. (I consider 3,000 miles good, 1,800~2,000 normal) GS500 isnt too powerful but it handles pretty damn well, you should be able to get by most people on the on or off ramps, just to show you can, then deliberatly slow down , just to prove you were not trying to race Dont mess with exhaust or you'll have major issues with carbs. There are a few tuning bits available but its never going much over genuine 50bhp (still enough for well over 100mph) learn to ride, not accelerate and brake as soon as you see the slightest curve. Have fun knowing you can afford to ride it anywhere anytime (and its been made for so long there are plenty of used parts around)

The GS500F will be just fine, it's not too big of a gap from the 250. It's a very nice starter bike that won't be ruthless in high RPM's. But it's also a good bike to have fun on, I'd recommend it.

don't worry what people say. I have a 06 SV650. I can beat a lot of people in the hills on my 650 while they ride there R6s and R1s and Hyabusas. It's rider skill not how many CCs your bike has. I also have a friend who rides a 500 cc dirt bike on the street, no one can catch him in the hill.

Maybe they're just jealous! If you like your bike, don't worry about what others are saying. Just ride and have fun.

The bike is fine. You need to man up and ride it. If it runs and will get you home again, just keep your right wrist cranked.

get an aftermarket exhaust is the first step I'd say... heck http://www.denniskirk.com should have a way for you to see every hop up part for that bike, as well as http://www.gmo1.com too
