Thats a dilly, if you have your AZ and you drive long haul then you should expect to make twice what a carpenter does. For day trippers or smaller trucks requiring a DZ license you would be driving dump trucks and 5 ton delivery(furniture) you would make about the same as a carpenter. The draw back(yes there always is one) is the better money means you see your family less as your on the road all week and after a short turn around right back out. It's a good life if your young or single but can wreak havoc on a marriage. I was both a driver and worked as a framing carpenter for 20 years. Driving nails or big trucks its all good.

Depends what type of carpenter?
Is he just a framer or does he do the job from start to finish?
Also What class of CDL driver?
What companies do these people work for?
Is the driver a company driver or an owner operator?
To many variables for a flat yes or no answer.
Buy typically company drivers are making $.43 a mile there are some companies that pay owner operators $1.83 a mile.
Also some companies pay a driver when he isn't loaded and others only pay when the driver is loaded.
With carpenters there are pay grades
Apprentice around minimum wage
journyman about a dollar or two more.
Master usually runs his own bussiness so up to him what he makes.
Btw from my experiance the less manual labor you do the more you get paid.

It depends. But my money is on truck drivers. Especially long haul. But if the truck drivers go across the border-forget it. You burn too much petrol waiting in line. I've heard truck drivers say it's not worth it. On the other hand I know a guy who has been a carpenter for 18 years and makes more than 30 dollars an hour which is more than some Registered Nurses make-this is why I said it depends on the Company you're working for and your job skills, experience etc.

That depends on alot of factors, Union vs. non-union for both parties. Location, country, etc. My guess is that most carpenteers make a better hourly rate than Truck Drivers. Here in North Eastern Pennsylvania union carpenteers make aprox 20-25 dollars an hour in the check plus benifits. I do not know what truck drivers make.

Depending on the locale. In IL, truck drivers make more money because it's all year round work (construction slows down in the winter). Also there's the issue of "right to work" states--like Texas, where there's no unions to control the wages and keep them livable. A carpenter can do "side jobs" for cash, tho, but that can consume any and all free time. Overall, I say an over the road trucker makes more $ than a journeyman carpenter. Bigger bucks for those Haz Mat certified drivers.

My husband is a journey level carpenter and makes about $45,000 a year. A truck driver could probably make that much driving cross country, not local. Carpentry allows you to stay pretty much in the same area but you have to work in the heat, rain, cold, ect. There are some trade offs but I think carpentry would be better.

Like it have been said by others. It very much depends on which Co. that you joins and how skillful you negotiate during the interview. For a Carpenter, he can bring out his testimony but for a truck driver, maybe the distance that he covers every trip.
