This is called 'candling' and is done using a cone shaped candle and a protective shield.
There are special candles, not just any will work.
The candle is placed in the ear with a shield, or pan, between candle and ear. It burns for about 10 minutes and is supposed to draw toxins and extra wax out.

It's called candleing, you don't use a regular candle though. It is beeswax formed into a cone shape. You lie down and burn the wax, it does NOT drip into your ear, the cone shape will cause the warmth to funnel into your ear and it will draw up the earwax, which is usually what causes an earache. Most health food stores will have the cones, and can give you directions on using them. Inexpensive,,couple bucks. But it is a two man operation, so whoever will help you needs to go with you to buy, so they can get instructions.

I've never heard of this treatment but I do get some pretty bad earaches due to swimmers ear (when water gets trapped in the ear) my favorite remedy Tylenol & Isporal Alchohol. Tylenol for pain relief ofcourse and with the alchohol put a capfull in the sore ear while laying your head to side this will dry out the ear and the alchohol also has a warming effect inside the ear that really helps as well. This is safe unless you have any inner ear problems or hearing devices, surgery, etc. then ofcourse consult a doctor first.

I doubt this is an "Indian" remedy.

I read an article once where the FDA raided some kind of alternative health store and siezed, among other things, their ear-candles (apparently not FDA approved and therefore cannot be sold as medical therapy).

From the article, I inferred that if you had the right kind of candle, you just lay down, stuck it in the air, lit the candle, and waited until your ear felt better or started to burn.

yes, it's called Ear Candling and is very effective I have used it a number of times on myself and my son and husband. You can buy Wally's Ear Candles at almost any health food store. I would suggest having someone help you, and have them read carefully how to do it, also get the soothing ear oil as there can be some irritation.

Yes it's called candling, but do not do it. after an ear operation going to the doc to remove wax was very painfull, every thing was fine for years for no reason i had candling done, then later when making a mold fora hearing aid the plastic melted onto the ear drum, that doc could tell i had candling& told me never to put anything into your ear, smaller then the elbow.

I hope you are not stupid enough to try that.
Your hearing is a precious gift you cannot get back.
Never put any thing in your ear smaller than a telephone pole. ( Quote by a pediatrician)
Not even a Qtip.
If you have an earache, go to the Dr.
Tell me you are not that dense.
I wonder how many people that tired this lost their hearing.
How will you get the wax back out ?
