DSL is through your phone company which will require that you have a phone line hooked up to the modem If you don't want to pay for a phone in your house then depending on the company they can do it. Most of the time they will require you to have a phone line make sure you put it to the most basic service there is. But the best way to go in my opionion is Cable modem if they offer it in your area. if you live in Texas then you might be lucky and be in the area that they are testing out Internet through the powerlines.

There is something new out there. Verizon and Sprint have "wireless DSL" which you use is a PCMCIA card that they provide with the service. You are basically using your laptop like a cellphone. A totally "wireless DSL" connection.

unless there's some new technology i haven't heard of, you can't get dsl without a phone line. you can get cable internet without a phone line.
