Back when i use to work on cars i had this happen one time this person had been to 4 or 5 places to try to find out what it was then he came to me. well i took the drive belt off and it still made the same sound so i got to looking for it and i found it it was the harmonic balancer. And that was in a Buick with a 3.8

take a close look at the harmonic balancer to see if it has shifted in the rubber and is rubbing the timing cover. If not, you can remove the belt. (not sure what year you have) or belts. Start it briefly without any belts, if no noise is heard then its one of the accessories or water pump. If you still have noise and its at the front of the engine then it might be a broken timing chain guide and the chain is rubbing the inside of the cover. But by removing the belt you can eliminate a lot of things.

don't know what year we have BUT check the take up idler. it is a pulley that does nothing but put tension on the belt. also if that is not it . take a long object like a broom stick or along screwdriver and touch it to your ear with enough pressure to impair your hearing then touch it to various places on the engine untill you find the problem. IT WORKS LIKE A STETHASCOPE

you could do some searching urself. first place to look would be the alternator. easiest way to do this is take a long screwdriver with a plastic handle and use it like a stethoscope. but the tip on the alternator and put ur ear on the plastic end. you should be able to hear where its coming from.

Could it be the fly wheel? The starter hanging up? Alternator bearing going bad, power steering pump, harmonic balancer???? Crank bearing, cam bearing, water pump????
I would start checking on the water pump.

You may have lost a gromet in your water pump... it would still work for a while...

It could be your alternator... maybe a brush got loose...

It could be your brake booster or power steering pump...

It could be your main behind the front seal...
