This is all controlled in the area of the brain calles the Pons. This area is in the back of the head at the base of the skull. It controls all vital functions such as breathing and heart beat. When the baby is in the womb, it actually practices breathing. These motions start during the later part of pregnancy and can sometimes be seen on an ultrasound. As soon as the umbilical cord is cut, the brain senses the lack of oxygen (which is delivered through the nother's blood in utero) and the pons starts the messages to the diaphragm to start working. This actually never stops unless there is injury to this part of the brain.

all baby's are born knowing things, there is a term for it but i have forgotten it, but if you rub a newborns check it will try to suck, it is what nature has give us to help us survive. just as you cant make your heart stop beating, you cant fight the instinct to breathe. a baby even knows to hold its breathe under water when they are young. they are born with that knowledge hardwired in.

They don´t. It's called survival instinct. Why does one blink when something approaches the eye? Why do cats always land on their feet?

well its not something that they really think about, the brain automatically does it. just think about it this way, you are breathing right now, are you thinking "breathe in, breathe out"? didnt think so. it just happens naturally, its the same thing for babies.

Breathing is reflexive, and is not controlled by conscious thought. It is essential to survival.
