Last week, I was on a previous phone # and was always connected at atleast 50K. Then it had to be disconnected and a new phone number due to my ex moving out.

I'm now back online today with my new number, and I cannot even connect faster than 31K. I was never connected that low on the previous phone number.

How can that be? Any tweaks I can do? I use Windows XP and my modem is brand new, just only 2 weeks old.

I wish I could have broadband or cable, but I live in the remote wilderness, and the closest they have DSL is 3 miles away. So I'm stuck with dial up for now. Satellite wouldn't work as I am surrounded by too many tall pine trees.

Hey there's nothing wrong with good old dial-up! Try looking at this site:

I know it's a bit heavy for the normal internet user, but if you can identify the type of modem you've got, it should help to try to modify the initialization string as they suggest. Always remember to make a note of what's in there first!
