In the growing season you can safely feed your outdoor plants every couple of weeks. Water then first if you really want to be on the safe side (some people water after feeding I only do this with solid fertilizer, if liquid then you wash away all that expensive fertilizer.

Check out Peters fertilizer ($11 for 10 lbs) as opposed to Miracle Grow ($18- for 10 lbs) 20-20-20. And for shrubs and trees I just buy the cheapest lawn fertilizer as long as the nitrogen content is not too low ($5.00 a bag for 40 lb bag) (there is a formula that that actually lets one compare the price of the actual 3 ingredients to compare price) for many fertilizes are just full of filler. And don't buy those stupid gadget like Miracle grows bottle dispenser with liquid fertilizer. These gadgets make life look simple but it's a big expense for saving a bit of time. Get an plastic fertilizer dispenser and put it in in granulated form.

Flowing plants can be feed more often. Some times if its been very hot I cut the fertilizer by 50%..just fill 1/2 the bottle. First feed your plants that you know won't mind. As the blue fades and dilutes I go to things like bulbs that are sprouting or seeds that are at least 2" tall.

Never feed newly planted plants and plants that are in distress.
As long as you don't burn the roots the plants don't care they will only take what they need.....(sorta like when I'm full I stop eating)
Happy Gardening

PS Pick up one or more of Jerry Bakers Books on gardening and if you follow his advice you plants will become very happy little fellas

all plants are different and have their own fertilization needs and should be fed as to what their requirements are. Check with the local nursery for this info or at the local library and get a book on plants
