Well... maybe your question is not clear. Live without them yes, because "Avid reader" is right: in western societies we can live without hands and feet, we can live if we are deaf or blind, extremely old or even in a coma.
But do they serve no purpose for us? No. If you never use your hands other than to type in your PC, they seem useless or even a burden, but if you do any kind of handy-work, then you notice that "Dan D" and "Zube" have the wrong references. Human nails, though evolved from similar uses as other animals' (as claws), are useful to protect fingers, they are not designed to be used as weapons or hunting devices. We still need them for a lot more than opening Cd's. Without fingernails you would find a lot of people with "fingertip mutilations" shaking your hand. A kind of handicap you seldom see now a days.

Fingernails are what we call exo skeletons.. and to humans they don't serve a very important function.. may be if we were ants that use exo skeletons as a body frame and defensive mechanism, i will say that we cant live without em..
finally i think we can live without em

The human and primate nail corresponds to a claw. Nails are essentially leftover from evolution and will probably someday become another vestigal organ. While nails do come in handy when you have an itch, we can certainly live without them.

Evolved out? or ripped off?

either way yes. The human animal has evolved to a point where it's natural defense is intelligence.

Unwrapping CDs would be impossible though. :)

I would say yes... we can live without toe nails. The skin would just toughen.
