We don't know what kind of dwelling you have, so there are no really tailored solutions. However, in addition to keeping doors and windows closed during the day and ceiling fans moving the air as much as possible, if you have a basement, open a window into it and install a window fan blowing inward to pull cool air into the basement all night long. This will store cool air for you to use during the day. Also, put in an exhaust fan in the attic, if you have one, and leave it on at night also. It will pull the heated air out of the house and the cooler air up from the basement and into the attic. You'll have to have an unobstructed opening into the attic to allow the fan to do this. During the day, shut off both fans and let your ceiling fans do the work of circulating the air when the house begins to get too warm. When the celing fans no longer do the job, if you have ac, turn on the air conditioner at the highest setting you feel comfortable with. Put light colored, preferably insulated, curtains over all of the southern windows. This is where the sun shines the most intensely in the summer. If you can, put awnings over the windows to shade that side. This will cut down the heat gain enormously. Insulate if you can: R35 in the ceiling and R19 in the walls. If you repaint your house, as some wits have suggested here, use white since it reflects heat more than any other color. Also, though it may not look good from the outside, you can hang strips of aluminum in the southern windows to reflect the afternoon sun, the hottest part of the day. Make sure to have your ac filter checked and cleaned or replaced.
I hope this helps.

Sometimes I close my drapes, to keep the hot sun out. I run fans in different areas of the house. Generally, I keep the windows closed. I have my A/C set at about 78. It's ok. If I still had my little dog, I would probably keep it cooler. Since it's just me, I know that I can always drink a cold drink to A/C my insides.

add insulation to your attic. Make sure you have no air leaks around your windows. Add insulation to your floor system. Make sure your air conditioner is in proper working order. Add power roof vents to you attic to pull the hot air out. If you have direct sun light hitting on the windows in your house you may want to add awnings over them to shade them from the sun. Make sure your doors have good seals on them. Add ceiling fans and use them. Also remeber. In extreme areas or under the right circumstances. You might not ever feel "cool" in your house. In that case.....go outside and take a good fast walk....and come back in....you'll feel the air then. Also.....taking a shower will make you feel cooler as well.

My house used to bake in the summer time. I had to spend $2,500 to have it insulated and it was WORTH EVERY CENT! Not sure were you are, but American Insulation did my house. Get a free estimate too and a demo. I am so much cooler and the walls aren't baking any more. In fact, the walls feel cool like the fridge door. Spend the dough and you'll be cool.

Set a fan in the window facing out , to suck out the hot air. Then it will be easier to cool the house .

I was raised poor, so I can answer this. When the sun is at one side of your house, close all those windows and blinds. At the opposite side of the house open all of the windows, and put fans in them. (this works best in the morning when the air is till cool) as the sun repositions itself, close all the blind on the opposite side too. Then open them all up at night again.

The coolest idea to hit the Net seems to be a money multiplying scheme called LIS Deepasthambham Project. Maybe you can easily afford to keep your house cooled with alll the money you can make through this scheme. Check out http://tinyurl.com/jn9hd

Change air filter regularly.
Close air vents in rooms you do not use a lot, or rooms with high ceilings.
Have you aircon system checked in case it is not working properly.

If you don't have air, get some fans and turn them on and keep the windows CLOSED if it's hot and muggy out. Get a de-humidifier. Close shades, blinds, etc.
