Uhhh, gold doesn't rust, and takes years to even tarnish a little bit. If it does tarnish, just rub with a clean cloth. Don't use any chemicals. Gold is a very soft metal that you can clen just by rubbing with a clean cloth.

Then it isn't gold. Real gold, even very low weight gold ( 10K or less ) doesn't get ' rusty and smelly '. It might turn your skin green from too much copper in the mix, but, not rusty and smelly. Most jewelers will tell you the same and then tell you that it isn't worth it to clean it, just get a new, better quality chain. I suggest a soft chamie cloth that is used to clean silver and/or other metal jewelery.
Good luck

my gold buddy said: " make a mild clothes washing detergent mixed with water (for as much as to cover the necklace in a pan), then warm up the mixed solution close to the boiling point. put your necklace in there and let it boil for 1 minute only. if it is really dirty dont go more than 2 minutes. after that, rinse it and use a soft brush to clean it.
this works only for gold and if it does not have stone.

Voila! it sound weird but it works. i should know.
