My 1998 Jeep Cherokee makes a loud thump when shifted from drive to reverse and from reverse to drive, and it shakes when I take a curve. I'm pretty good with car repairs but I haven't found the root of the problem. I've taken apart the transfer case and rear end and found no mechanical problems. I've seen online that the linkage for the 4-wheel drive shifter may need replacing. Any thoughts? The transfer case is ok, and so is the rear end. I have the front drive shaft out, and the engine mounts are good. Could it still be in the front end? The transmission shift good, and doesn't slip. I'm finding it hard to believe that it could be in the transmission. Any thoughts? Please Help!

that still sounds like a transfer-case problem however unless you have manual locking hubs, the front axle and drive-shaft yoke are still engaged and if the u-joints or bearings are bad they will still make noise or "catch" in corners

In a front wheel drive, I'd say you have an issue in the CV joints. But for a 4wd, I'm a little lost.

Sounds like a universal joint to me, not too expensive to fix. Watch out your drive shaft does not fall off, then can be more expensive and more serious.
