when you ask a genuine question and get smart alec replies do you feel a little disheartened by it.

Yes I do and I get quite angry for other people who have taken the time to ask a question and then they get bombarded by nerdish answers

Amusing answers are probably OK. But I should think most people get peeved with insults. You get a few 'Bushwhackers'. People who give insulting or threatening answers then hide in the shadows.
The thing to do is check their other Questions & Answers.
I'm surprised that Yahoo haven't something like a 3 strikes and out. 3 different people can vote a persons answer off and that person looses 5 points.
Oh, well. Must get on....

i do but you have to remember that this place isn't a computer it wont always tell you the right answer and because it peoples opinions you never really get the answer you want, such is life people think very differently and if you take the leap of asking expect that the reply is outta your control
if you get angry they've won just choose the answer you like and close it saying exactly what you think of the other people! but LOL I'm one of the smart alec's!

try and cover your a*** when you ask questions.think them through and try to disarm the potential smart alecs in the wording of your question.now and again throw in a mad one that is obviously fiction and watch the fools bite.Have the last laugh.i wont go on cos nobody likes a smart alec..!

It's only because everyone can earn 2 points every time they answer. Otherwise they probably wouldn't get so silly. ;o)

Sometimes, but it is good practice for life. Toughens you up....
But once the answers were so snotty, I deleted the question, it was too much.

Yeh, but mostly it's true, like I do ask stupid questions (unintentionally of course) But I try not to answer meanly, I do try!

Yes! It's annoying, if you don't have a propper answer to a serious question it can be very tedious!
