The character and all the original 007 books by Ian Fleming are owned by what used to be The Broccoli Brothers, but Cubby Broccoli died so now there's just the one Broccoli who owns the whole she-bang.

All the Ian Fleming books have been made into movies already, so theyre going back to their roots with the newest Bond flick, a remake of "Casino Royale". starring that guy who looks even less James Bondian than George Lazenby did. Remakes of classics have an abysmal track record at the box office. I have no faith this movie will ever take the place of the original "Casino Royale". I actually do like the 007 movies which werent based on a Fleming book, such as the last 3 Brosnan vehicles.

Isnt Flemming dead by now?

Yeah he died in 1964.. Kind of hard to own rights to a franchise when your dead. Must be his widdow or the studios themselves. The only movie made out of his books is this casino royale coming out this fall.
So it would make sense that someone else has the rights.

You mean besides the studios? I believe the franchise is still owned by the author of the series, Ian Flemming. Believe it or not he owns an island called Goldeneye.
