I say what is the point in being in a position of power if you can't help out your friends and family. I don't mean to the extreme, like get them out of trouble if they do something wrong. But I don't see a problem with helping someone you know get a job.

Well the problem there is nepotism. You may help a friend or relative get a job but there was someone more qualified to get it and should have it. The people pay taxes to fulfill that position and should have the best applicant - not the one that makes the politicians friends and family happy?

Regardles of being a small place or a big place - politics exists. More often than not, its not what you know, but who you know. Recall the saying, ..."To the victor, the spoils". Part of winning an election or being in a position of power, helping friends, family and those that helped you is the natural way for things to operate. All things being equal, there isn't any reason that you help a person get a job.

Sad thing is that the ethical thing to do is to put th epeolpe you know on the bottom of the stack of equally qualified people when considering them for a job.

Feel free to suggest to them that the job will be available soon, so they have an edge in applying, but let familiarity be a deterrent rather than a plus when reviewing the application.

Another thing to consider is firing policy, what will you do when the person doesn't work out, fire your own mother??????

Have fun agonizing over this, it's a fun topic.

This misnomer is that politics is a position of power. Political representatives are "supposed" to be servants of the public.
The issue of power is why the system in the USA was built on checks and balances.
