Los Bravos!!! I think it goes back farther than 1980, though.

The version you're speaking of might have been from the seventies or eighties, but the original was recorded back in 1966 by Los Bravos. I remember this song when it came out. See link below.

Man, it sometimes amazes me how songs can have a certain "sound" to some & a totally different sound to others.

That song, to My ears, has a very 60s, Motown-ish sound. 80s pop songs had a very distinct sound.
But I'm biased. I used to radio dj & I know the song.
Great song though.

You might be thinking of the Rick Sprinfield song "Black is Black" although he's not a woman

Black Is Black
Los Bravos

Black is black
I want my baby back
It's gray, it's gray
Since she went away, Ooh-Ooh
What can I do
'Cause I-I-I-I-I'm feelin' blue

If I had my way
She'd be back today
But she don't intend
To see me again, Ooh-Ooh
What can I do
'Cause I-I-I-I-I'm feelin' blue

I can't choose
It's too much to lose
My love's too strong
Wow! Maybe if she
would come back to me
Then it can't go wrong

Bad is bad
That I feel so sad
It's time, it's time
That I found peace of mind, Ooh-Ooh
What can I do
'Cause I-I-I-I-I'm feelin' blue

I can't choose
It's too much to lose
My love's too strong
Wow! Maybe if she
would come back to me
Then it can't go wrong

Black is black
I want my baby back
It's gray, it's gray
Since she went away, Ooh-Ooh
What can I do
'Cause I-I-I-I-I'm feelin' blue
'Cause I-I-I-I-I'm feelin' blue
