I don't believe we are protecting Israel. We are actually stopping them from putting Palestinians on the endangered species list. Since the 1960's the US has been encouraging Israeli leaders to peaceful negotiations with all of the countries on its borders that have openly announced their hatred for Israel and all who live there. These neighbors do not understand peaceful negotiations, but they do comprehend an M1 tank chasing them.

Because Israel is a civilized ally. I think that the USA would stand up for any of its civilized allies, not just Israel.

Because nobody else is able to help them, and other religions and countries would like to annihilate them for no other reason than they are Israel. By the way, Israel is pretty darn good at protecting itself.
