my horse desire loves it and she wears protective gears while doing it so if a fall might happen she protected and gets extra oats and such things to keep her from getting over tired and such

lets face it - the scary thing about the animal rights movement is that there are some factions who believe that doing ANYTHING with an animal is abusive. PETA is chipping away at animal activities one sport at a time. So few people know anything about animals that they buy into astonishing lies and PETS repeats them with such vigor that those who know better are not believed.

I have several friends who barrel race. Their horses almost seem to get upset when they don't get to race! They love to do and I think they get just as much excitement out of it as the owners. The lady who told you this is very naive and probably has no clue about horses or animals at all. There are people in this world who sadly choose to abuse their animals, but you are not one of them for barrel racing!

I never saw much of a challenge in racing a barrel...
har har just kidding.
ANyone that races horses knows better than to say they are abusing their horse.
Horses love to run, you take care of them and feed them. How is that abuse.
Next time tell that lady that if you wanted poo from her you'd squeeze her head.

Barrel racing is a great activity and great exersize for both of you. That woman is ignorant of the sport and probably horses in general. You know better so enjoy yourself and don't let that witch stop you.

Too many people don't have a clue what they're talking about. Many think it's abusive to ride one. I'd discount it - if your horse is healthy, sound and sane what some biased animal rights person thinks shouldn't matter. You know your horse.

As long as you treat your horse well, and take all preventative measures to keep it from getting hurt, then I see no problem with it.
