The one critical mistake they make is they get self assured that you won't find out and aren't very careful at some point.
If they are going to cheat, then they need to end the first relationship beforehand,, its the best way.

I would think the answer might possibly be to deny the affair when confronted directly about it by the partner or spouse

The one mistake that cheaters make when having an affair is having an affair in the first place. You, your spouse, your marriage, and the person you're having an affair with all lose! Think about it!
