Use a tennis ball and bounce it. treat it as it were a basketball if this is too hard try using one of the little mini balls. This will make a real size basketball be much easier to control.

There are many ways to improve your ball handling. Personally when i played, it was either using the over-sized ball (that thing will make you pretty damn good) and doing drills with that. Or just using the regular ball and going full speed diagonally with the court 4-5 steps, then crossing over, then the other direction 4-5 steps then crossing over, down and back. Then do the same thing but between the legs, then try it behind the back, then do a combination. Youll be able to break any full court press they throw at you with that. Another great thing to work on is your dribbling off the pivot. Get a good, quick move down, maybe a jab step followed by a pump fake, then taking off, or taking off quick left then crossing right throwing your defender off balance leaving you with an easy pull up jumper. Its all easier said then done its all gonna take practice, but definitely give this stuff a try. Just practice, practice, practice. Good luck man.

Practice! Right handed, lefty, switching hands, crossing over, walk, jog, run, circles, figure eights, spin, never look at athe ball. Practice moves like you have a defender on you.
I disagree with the tennis ball idea. I found that going from a larger ball to a smaller one helps control, not the other way. I.e. like when you pick up a womans ball and mess around with it. They have the oversized Big Balls. I have used them and after bouncing them around for only a few minutes I feel like I am Isiah Thomas with a regular sized ball. It'll help your shot, too.

As said above, dribble wherever you go- if you live close to a basketball court walk there and dribble the whole walk- be careful but try to always look straight ahead of you while your dribbling- this will help you keep your head up in games and make dribbling much easier. Work on jab steps and crossovers- dribbling is as much work with the feet as it is with the arms, the best ballhandlers have to be quick on their feet as well- but the most fundamental thing you can do to help is walk with a basketball and dribble with your head up- once you can go the whole walk without looking down, thats when you know you can dribble.

the one thing i do to increase my ball handling skills is dribble around with tennis balls.......it works, if you can control the handle with a small tennis ball, imagine the things you can do with a bigger basketball

First, as with everything in b-ball, practice dribbling a lot every day.
If you're on a team with a good coach, he/she will make you practice dribbling every day with various drills.
In my experience though, either you're a good dribbler or not.
If you're not, you can only get better to a point.
