The left ring finger is supposed to have a vein in it or an artery that flows straight from the heart, and it's supposed to also be closer to the heart than the right ring finger is.

maybe the first person to ever marry and recieve a ring had lost their first and second finger..was left handed so didn't want it to go on the right hand and the third finger was the next possible option..

It's said to have a bond with the heart, a vein going all the way, but that turned out to be false but the tradition is still there... It's the finger you use to put your make up on too cos its gentler.
