I've done a lot of study in this area due to my interest in Bluegrass music and American handicrafts. The Foxfire series of books are very helpful in understanding these wonderful American people.

Basically they are grounded in their faith in God, (most all are fundamentalist Christians), their families (most have never ventured more than 50 miles from their birthplace), and their communities. Unlike urban civilization, these people have deep roots and traditions which govern their lives. They prefer the old time ways and preserve traditions.

In many ways, they are the best prepared Americans to survive and thrive in a world-wide conflict because they have the know-how and community spirit to make it through times when goods are scarce and money scarcer.
