Mavis beacon is an excellent typing program and is usually cheap and is probably avaliable online for a decent price.

I took a typing class in school when I was about 12. I type about 95 words per minute and I never paid for anything. I don't have to look at the keyboard, but I don't use the homekeys if that makes any difference. What my teacher did was make us type (obviously) and then he'd give us a test on where all the keys are on the keyboard, it really worked since it's 6 years later and I still type accurately and quickly. Try doing that, and he told us something to help us remember the bottom row.

There are websites out that that will help you. Search for "typing tutor." The key is to learn the home row first. That's asdf for your left hand and jkl; on your right hand. Often the keyboard will have a small raised spot you can feel on your index finger, then you know you are starting off in the right place. The rest is just repetition that allows you to memorize where the rest of the keys are located. Find a website that works for you and it won't take long! Also, does your local library offer computer classes? They might be able to help.

Practice, practice, practice. Everything about typing is practice. I started to type in 3rd grade, where we had a program called Type To Learn in my school. After one year my typing was at about 23 words per minute. I continued the program until I reached middle school, when my typing was already 60 words per minute! I play the piano, so my fingers are flexible and can type very quickly. However, if you don't play the piano, your fingers get rigid in your teens. That is why fast typers started when they were young. As I said, the more you practice, the faster and better you will be. In no time, you will be typing like lightning, blindfolded!
P.S. Typing with your left hand's index finger on the F and your right hand's index finger on J when at rest will help, if you're typing with only the index finger. Use all the fingers to type fast, in case you're doing it like my parents, whose maximum typing speed is 20 words per minute because of that. =) Have a nice day.

I could never learn how to type either... I do OK but have no speed... If you practice, without looking at the keyboard -- and are persistent -- I think it'll get easy.
Don't give up!!

Like anything it just takes practice. You have to be patient for your brain to stop thinking about where the keys are and instinctively type what you want. It's not a very quick thing to do.

take a typing class or use a typing cd... believe me the really help out a lot. They show you the proper ways to type. Like, where your fingers should go and what finger types what... its hard at first... but you have to train your fingers how to type. It will get easier just keep practicing!

Because the keyboard is designed to slow you down and keep you from typing easily. Try doing the alphabet to practice.

Practice..that's all there is to it. Your fingers will "remember" where the appropriate "keys" are and then you'll be able to type without really thinking about it.~smiles
