Is there an Internet standard on this? It seems that some crawlers or search robots are picking up the footer on my web site and are listing it in the search results. What can I do to fix this? Is it really necessary to have anything there at all?

The footer of a page is not something very well specified. It is used usually to put information that must be there but not many people will read (like copyrights, date of last update, etc).

The web spiders use a lot of different techniques to index and rank content, but usually the closer a text is to the top of the page, the higher it gets indexed.

If your footer is being indexed it could mean that you have too little original content on your page.
