There is a double standard related to virginity and gender that's been around for thousands of years. If a female is no longer a virgin, she's "damaged goods." When bride prices were still a part of matrimonial culture, a non-virgin bride wouldn't bring as high a price for her family as a virgin bride. A non-virgin male, however, is just "sowing his wild oats", or being virile, or some other favorable attribute. If a female is not a virgin, she is "damaged", or a "loose woman", or some other unfavorable thing.

At least the double standard has lessened somewhat here in the West; it's no longer SUCH a huge deal, except in very conservative circles. In some cultures, it is very much, very horribly still alive. In most Islamic cultures, for example, if a woman is attacked and raped, it is customary for one of her male relatives to murder her because she was defiled and brought shame to the family. Delightful how women are treated in this modern age, eh?

Because a woman's virtue once lost can never be regained, women are judged on a higher standard than men. Men defile women and then call them whores, the standard is set by the male population. Men are expected to have sex with as many partners as possible, this is considered virile, but women are not.

You mean, why does the media portray women as more interested in preserving their virginity?

I guess it started with the "easier to tell if a woman is a virgin" aspect, but I think now it's just a self-fueled phenomenon.

This is easy - GIRLS get PREGNANT!!! If a girl gets pregnant she pays the price. Wither she carries the baby to term or aborts she pays the price emotionally and physically. So girls should THINK about who they are bedding. Also, most boys are unworthy of your attention. Good luck!

Because a females train of thought is, on the whole, is more affected by emotions and in an emotional state. On the other hand, and male's train of thought is more logical and need based (carnal necessity-eat, sleep, sex, succeed, that kind of thing).
