it's not as customary as tipping a server. most carryout people at least get paid minimum wage instead of the $2.13 the servers get. but, it is always appreciated. especially if it is a very large order, (50 bucks or more). that's a lot of stuff that they have to package and double-check for you.
edit-god! you people are cheap! the nogoodguy above me never tips even when he sits down to eat? you cheap jackasses should have to serve for an entire week and i guarantee your attitude towards tipping would change forever.

ACTUALLY I WORK AT applebee's, THOSE people make 3.90 and depend on tips, they do ALOT more than you think (i.e. "they just carry the bags out to the car") I think every food service employee should be tipped, and if you're too cheap to eat out and tip the right way, then you shouldnt eat out.
And not even tipping a server?? Can you say DEADBEAT???? CHEAP *** DEADBEAT!!!!

I remember in High School we had to watch a video about etiquette and one video was about restaurant etiquette and it said that you should only tip if someone serves you your food. Do you tip the person that hands you your food at McDonalds? No! Of course not! Don't tip at Applebeese unless you're eating in.

You shouldn't have tip. I know some places have take out, and they have a tip jar on thier counter when you pay for your food to go. But you shouldn't have to, they're not really helping you too much. Besides, it'll save you a buck.

I don't think it should be customary... afterall, you don't tip someone at McDonald's or Burger King for passing the food out the window.
They want to "guilt" you into paying more than you should.

Yes you should tip them the same as you should tip the pizza man. They work for tips people not just to serve you food.

no. It is customary to pray after you eat at Applebee's (yuck). Eating is bad in your neighborhood.

I usally do for carry out. It all depends on how fast it gets there. I usally tip a buck or two.
