I am supposed to get my period next week and I am hoping that because I started the pill today it will hold off the start of my period. Does anyone know this to be true? Just curious

Yes ...it should hold off your next period. It is not uncommon for females to use this to abstain from having a monthly. My gyn said that there is no harm in this practice ...but that once in a while you should allow yourself to have a cycle.

Have you ever taken the pill before?
Usually you would start taking the pill either the day your period starts, or on a Sunday during your period. For example, when I start my new pack, it's always on the weekend I have my period. If you wanted to skip a cycle, you don't take the reminder pills(the last week in the pack).
I wouldn't be surprised if you start late, but I don't think this will cancel out your period for this month.
As an aside, you should keep using another form of birth control for the first month.

being on the pill will definitely change your cycle, but it will become very regular after the first months.
I used to be able to tell by the hour when my period would start when i was on the pill.
